What Size Dumpster Do I Need? A Springfield Guide
Quick answer: when in doubt, a 20 yard. How to pick between 10, 15, 20, 30 and 40 yards by volume, weight and driveway space — and why the weekly cart will not take a remodel.

The honest answer is "it depends" — but it depends on a small, predictable set of things. Once you know them, you know what to expect. Here is the arithmetic we do before we give you a number.

Typical rentals in Springfield range from $295 to $695, with no hidden fuel or pickup fees. Some companies advertise a low starting price, then stack on delivery fees, pickup fees, fuel surcharges and environmental fees. We quote one flat rate that includes delivery, pickup, your rental period and a weight allowance. The number we tell you is the number you pay, and you get it before delivery.
We quote by phone because your price depends on your project. Tell us what you are working on and roughly how much debris you expect, and we recommend the size and give you the flat rate on the spot. We accept all major credit cards, business checks and electronic payments, and we can email invoices to business clients.
Size. A 10 yard costs less than a 40 because it holds less. Renting too big wastes money; renting too small means paying for a second haul. Debris type. Household junk, yard waste and construction debris are handled differently, and heavy materials like concrete, dirt, brick and shingles are often priced or sized differently than light bulky debris. Weight. Every rental includes a weight allowance; stay under it and the flat rate covers everything. Rental period. The flat rate includes a set number of days. Location and permits. Where the box goes, and whether that spot needs a permit, are part of the quote.
| Size | Holds about | Weight included |
|---|---|---|
| 10 yard | 3 pickup loads | Up to 2–3 tons |
| 15 yard | 4–5 pickup loads | 2–3 tons |
| 20 yard | 6 pickup loads | 3–4 tons |
| 30 yard | 9 pickup loads | 4–5 tons |
| 40 yard | 12 pickup loads | 5–6 tons |
The standard rental is 7 days. Need longer? Call or text and we extend it at a small daily rate. Done early? We bump you up the pickup schedule, with no penalty.
The biggest cost inside any flat rate is disposal, and around Springfield the public rate is published. The City's Noble Hill Sanitary Landfill charges "$43.85 per ton, with a minimum charge of $20" for household trash, construction and demolition waste, clean fill and special wastes accepted by prior approval; special handling adds $140 an hour. Clean fill — uncontaminated soil, sand, gravel, concrete, cinder blocks, asphalt and brick — is taken at the same per-ton rate once scale-house staff check it. In other words, weight drives the disposal cost, which is why we ask what is going in.
Some loads cannot go to a Missouri landfill at any price. Yard waste has been banned since 1992, so it goes to yard-waste recycling instead: the City's Yardwaste Recycling Center takes grass, leaves and garden waste free and charges for brush — $11 for a car, SUV, pickup or trailer under 8 feet, up to $38 for a dump truck, or $7 a cubic yard for large volumes. Appliances, tires, batteries and liquids are turned away at the landfill gate, which is why they stay out of the box.
Delivery location is part of every quote. From our yard at 660 S Glenstone Ave, approximate road miles are: Republic 10, Battlefield 11, Strafford 12, Nixa 13, Willard 15, Rogersville 16, Ozark 16, Fair Grove 17, Billings 21, Clever 21, Ash Grove 24, Sparta 24, Marshfield 25 and Bolivar 32. Inside Springfield, most addresses are a short run. These are approximate figures, but they explain why the far runs can cost a little more.
None of these change our flat rate, but they can add to the cost of a job. Demolition permits sit with the owner: a Springfield Wrecking Permit is $151 residential or $171 commercial; Republic's demolition permit is $100; Battlefield charges $35 per 500 square feet plus a $500 cash bond refunded with proof of proper disposal; unincorporated Greene County wants a $500 cash bond, refunded only with a disposal receipt. A regulated demolition adds MoDNR's $120 asbestos notification fee. Battlefield's dumpster permit is free. Springfield's right-of-way permit fees are set per block per week and not published.
Hauler licences sit with the hauler. Billings charges $25 per vehicle a year and Marshfield $25 per truck; Nixa wants a $500 bond, Willard $2,000,000 in liability insurance, and Bolivar a $10,000 bond for household and commercial hauling. Springfield's licence fee is not published. We hold ours in every town we serve.
The most expensive container is the one that should have been two. A slab, a shingle roof and a kitchen in one 30 yard is far past its allowance; a 10 of concrete plus a 20 of everything else stays inside both. Banned items cost money too — fridges, freezers, AC units, washers, dryers, water heaters, tires, car batteries and used oil do not belong in the box; the what-goes-in guide says where each goes instead. Yard waste mixed into a trash load is a problem under the state landfill ban, so tell us first. And never load above the rim: an overfilled box cannot be safely transported. Call and we swap it for an empty one instead.
For anything beyond a couple of pickup loads, a container you load yourself is usually the better value, because you are paying for the box rather than the hours. For a small job with nobody to lift, our junk removal may suit you better. Call (417) 720-8150 — 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. We offer same-day or next-day delivery; call before noon and we can usually have a truck on site within hours.

From this guide
Typical rentals in Springfield range from $295 to $695, depending on size, rental period, debris type and location. We quote each job flat, by phone, with no hidden fuel or pickup fees.
Delivery, pickup, your rental period and a weight allowance. Extra days and weight over the allowance are the only additions, and we explain both before you load.
Keep it separate, in a smaller box of its own, so it never pushes a mixed load over its allowance. Missouri counts clean concrete, brick, rock and soil as clean fill, which MoDNR says can be used as fill on-site with the owner's permission.
Delivery location is part of the quote, so the far runs — Marshfield is about 25 road miles from our yard and Bolivar about 32 — can cost a little more. Any town permit fee is separate.
