The 40 yard container in Springfield
The 40 yard is a job-site container, and the largest size we offer. Eight-foot sides mean it is loaded by machine or by a crew throwing from height, and at about 22 feet long it usually wants a lot or a job site rather than a house driveway. Commercial and industrial construction, full-building renovations, large office or retail cleanouts, apartment and condo renovations, roofing on large structures, storm recovery — that is where it lives. It holds about twelve pickup loads.
It is light, bulky debris that justifies the 40: packaging, pallets, framing, fixtures, furniture from a whole building. Concrete, brick and metal can go in within the weight limit, but heavy rubble fills the allowance long before the box looks full, so for concrete, soil or brick we usually suggest a smaller container alongside it.
Construction, demolition and big commercial jobs
General contractors on multi-phase projects, developers on new builds and demolitions, property managers renovating multi-unit buildings, businesses upgrading a facility — those are the regular 40 yard customers. Demolition in Missouri comes with paperwork: the Missouri Department of Natural Resources wants a regulated structure inspected by a Missouri-certified asbestos inspector and a notice filed at least 10 working days before demolition — even if no asbestos is found — with a $120 fee for each demolition. A single residential building of four or fewer units is exempt from that rule; two or more houses, or any building used for something other than housing, is not. Asbestos never goes in a roll-off, and the City's Noble Hill landfill will not take it. We will ask what the building is before we quote.
Every load has to end up somewhere legal. DNR says non-hazardous demolition debris must go to a permitted solid waste landfill or processing facility, and Springfield's code makes demolition permit holders name an approved disposal site on the application (Sec. 94-74). Outside the city limits, Greene County holds a $500 cash bond on a demolition permit and refunds it only with a receipt from a licensed disposal site; Battlefield holds a $500 bond until it sees proof of proper disposal. Ask us for the disposal receipt when you book.
Access and placement for a 40 yard
The truck needs a clear run in — more room if it has to turn — a flat, stable surface and nothing low overhead. On a job site we place it where the crews can work around it. A 40 that has to sit in a public street needs the town's say-so: Springfield bans obstructions in the public way that hinder traffic or drainage (Sec. 98-1) and requires a temporary traffic control permit for work that affects traffic in the right-of-way; Willard's and Nixa's codes keep commercial waste containers on private property unless the City gives written permission; Ash Grove's code bans obstructing a street or sidewalk in any manner (§ 515.010); and Republic lets construction use the street for reasonable periods but wants a safe walkway kept clear and building refuse removed within 3 days of finishing (§§ 510.010–510.020). Each town page says what that town's code asks for.
Suitability
Is the 40 yard the right size for you?
Rough working figures. Weight, not volume, is what usually decides.
Choose the 40 yard for
- Commercial and industrial construction
- Full-building renovations and demolitions
- Large office, retail and warehouse cleanouts
- Apartment and condo renovations
- Storm recovery and long projects on a swap schedule
Pick a different size for
- Residential driveways (it rarely fits and you will pay for unused space)
- Heavy-only loads — concrete, brick and dirt go in smaller boxes
- Jobs without machine or crew loading
- Asbestos, hazardous waste, tires and batteries
Placing a 40 yard container on a Springfield-area property
It needs a flat, stable spot about 22 feet long and 8 feet wide on a lot or job site, room for the truck to roll it off (more if it has to turn), and nothing low overhead. On your own driveway or lot in Springfield we found no City permit for a roll-off; in the street or on the sidewalk, City Code Sec. 98-1 bans obstructions that hinder traffic or block drainage, and work in the right-of-way that affects traffic needs a temporary traffic control permit — call Traffic Operations at 417-864-1980 first. Other towns have their own rules — Battlefield wants a free City permit for any project dumpster in public view, and Ash Grove's code bans obstructing a street. Check your HOA too: some cover containers in driveways. Boards go under the dumpster on request. Each town page covers its own code.

Answers
40 Yard Dumpster — questions we get asked
Will a 40 yard dumpster fit on a residential property?
Rarely. It needs a lot, a long drive or a job site. For houses, a 30, or a 20 with swaps, usually works better.
How do you load a 40 yard?
By machine or by crew. The sides are eight feet high, so hand loading from the ground is slow — plan for a skid steer or a ramp.
Can I put concrete in a 40 yard?
Within the weight limit, yes — but not as the main load. Five to six tons (about 10,000 to 12,000 pounds) is included and concrete hits that at a fraction of the volume. Put rubble in a 10 yard loaded level alongside the 40, or ask us for a split-load plan.
Do you offer long-term rates?
Yes. Extended projects get long-term pricing and swap-out service — tell us the expected duration and we will quote the whole job.

40 yard dumpsters delivered across the Springfield metro and the 417
We run roll-off containers out of the Glenstone Avenue yard to every town below. Springfield and the closest towns are often same-day; the edges of the area are more often next-day. Most of the towns we checked license or permit the haulers that work inside their limits, and a few keep containers off the street — each page says so plainly. If your town is not listed, call anyway.
