What Size Dumpster Do I Need? A Springfield Guide
Quick answer: when in doubt, a 20 yard. How to pick between 10, 15, 20, 30 and 40 yards by volume, weight and driveway space — and why the weekly cart will not take a remodel.

If you have never rented a dumpster, this is the page to read first. It covers the whole process from the phone call to the pickup, with the Springfield, Greene County and Missouri specifics that national guides leave out.

Whether you are renovating a home, clearing out a garage, managing a construction site or cleaning up a commercial property, a roll-off puts all the debris in one place instead of making trip after trip to the landfill. The payoff is faster cleanup, a safer job site, less labor and a project that stays organized. Bathroom and kitchen remodels, flooring and roofing replacements, estate and foreclosure cleanouts, moves and spring cleaning all fill a box quicker than a trailer.
Our yard is at 660 S Glenstone Ave in Springfield. Glenstone was part of Route 66's path across the city — Springfield is, in the City's own words, "officially recognized as the birthplace" of the Mother Road.
Start with the job, then check the weight. A 10 yard (about 3 pickup loads) suits bathroom remodels, garage and attic cleanouts and small yard jobs. A 15 (4–5 loads) suits deck removal, flooring and carpet, and medium renovations. The 20, 30 and 40 share a 22-foot footprint and get taller: the 20 (about 6 loads) when in doubt — roofing tear-offs, multi-room renovations, whole-house cleanouts; the 30 (about 9) for new builds, demolitions and commercial remodeling; the 40 (about 12) for commercial construction and large-scale cleanouts. Included weight runs from up to 2–3 tons on a 10 to 5–6 tons on a 40. The sizing guide has the full table.
Springfield does not run city trash pickup. "Curbside collection of trash and recyclables in Springfield is provided by more than 10 private, independent licensed trash hauling companies," and every one must offer curbside recycling. City Council has kept the system "whereby citizens select the trash hauler." Those carts are for household trash: the City Code's container rules leave out bulky rubbish, yard waste and demolition and construction waste. That is why a roll-off is the normal answer for a remodel, a roof, a cleanout or a job site.
Household chemicals go to the City's Household Chemical Collection Center at 1226 W. Nichols Street, by appointment (417-864-2000). Yard waste goes to the Yardwaste Recycling Center — see the fall cleanup guide.
On your own driveway we found no City rule written for a roll-off. In the street, City Code Sec. 98-1 bars obstructions that hinder traffic or drainage, and the City has no published dumpster street permit or fee — call Traffic Operations (417-864-1980) before a street drop. Every hauler in the city needs a yearly City licence under Sec. 94-7, which covers demolition and construction waste; we hold ours. The permit guide covers the other 14 places we serve.
Knocking down a building in Springfield needs a Wrecking Permit — $151 residential, $171 commercial. Before it is issued, City Utilities retire the water, gas and electric (417-831-8888), the sewer is capped by a City-licensed plumber, a certified inspector does an asbestos inspection with the report sent to Environmental Services, and the City checks each structure "for historical significance." Properties in the Commercial Street Historic District or the Walnut Street Urban Conservation District need a Certificate of Appropriateness first. City Code Sec. 94-74(a) wants the disposal site listed on the demolition permit application. Asbestos debris is not allowed in the City landfill. The contractor guide covers the state notice and the County bond.
Each town runs trash its own way. Republic (about 10 road miles; 18,750 people in 2020 and an estimated 22,404 in 2025) has no City trash service and closed its recycling center in 2018. Battlefield residents contract privately, with Republic Services as the City's preferred provider at $17.42 a month. Nixa contracts Republic Services for carts, with one large item a week. Ozark is "not an exclusive trash hauler city." Willard uses the City's approved contractors. Strafford (about 12 miles) and Clever (about 21) did not publish trash details we could read. Many of these towns license haulers — we hold ours for your town. Each has its own page on the service area.
In: household junk and furniture; construction and remodeling debris such as drywall, wood, flooring, siding and fixtures; roofing shingles (heavy, so tell us); metal, plastic, cardboard and packaging; and concrete, brick or asphalt in limited loads. Out, by Missouri landfill bans: major appliances such as fridges, freezers, AC units, washers, dryers and water heaters; used oil; car batteries; whole tires; and yard waste in a trash load. Out of our boxes as well: paints, solvents and automotive fluids, propane tanks and fuel, medical waste, asbestos and hazardous chemicals. The full guide says where each goes instead.
Load evenly and keep everything level with the rim — an overfilled dumpster cannot be safely transported. Break down big items and spread heavy material across the floor. Keep the path clear for pickup. Call or text before the pickup date if you need more time; we extend at a small daily rate. Contractors can book several dumpsters at once with staggered deliveries and swaps.
To book, call (417) 720-8150, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Have the address, the material and a rough quantity ready. You will have a flat price before you hang up.
