Homes around here vary enough that one container does not fit all of them. An older house in town with a narrow drive or an alley wants a 10 or a 15 and a driver who takes it slowly. A newer subdivision in Republic or Nixa may have room for a 20, and sometimes an HOA with its own rules. An acreage out past Willard or Fair Grove has room for anything. The first thing we ask on the phone is what your driveway looks like.

Most residential jobs are one of three things: a cleanout (a garage, an attic, or a whole house before a move or a sale), a remodel (kitchen, bath, flooring, roof), or the yard — landscaping, a tree coming down, storm cleanup. Each wants a different size and a different talk about weight. The size comparison covers the numbers, the home cleanout checklist covers the sorting, and the phone call covers your job.

What actually fills a residential container

Garage, attic and estate cleanouts lead the way: furniture, boxes, mattresses, clothing, the contents of a shed. Kitchen and bath remodels are next — cabinets, tile, drywall, flooring, fixtures. Then the outdoor jobs: shingles off a roof, an old deck or fence, a landscaping redo, storm limbs.

Weekly trash is not built for any of that. Springfield does not run trash pickup at all: residents choose one of more than 10 licensed private haulers, and the City's code leaves bulky rubbish, yard waste and demolition and construction waste out of its rules for household containers (Sec. 94-72). In Nixa, the City's contractor Republic Services takes one large item a week, and its curbside list excludes construction projects, fences, carpet, decks, rocks, bricks, concrete, appliances, tires and brush. Battlefield's preferred-provider trash service is $17.42 a month on the sewer bill. Sparta's GFL service takes the GFL cart only — no bags, boxes or other containers. Anything bigger, heavier or sooner than that is what a residential roll-off is for.

Driveway placement, street rules and HOAs

On your own driveway in Springfield we found no City permit for a roll-off. Boards can go under the dumpster to protect the surface, and the driver sets the container where you want to load it — off the sidewalk and clear of storm drains. The street is another matter. City Code Sec. 98-1 bans any obstruction in the public way that hinders traffic or diverts or blocks drainage, and work in or next to the right-of-way that is expected to affect normal traffic needs a temporary traffic control permit from Public Works (Sec. 98-29), with plans that follow the federal work-zone manual and fees set per city block per week. We found no permit written specifically for a dumpster, and no published fee, so call Traffic Operations at 417-864-1980 before you plan on the street.

Two more things. If you live in a subdivision with an HOA, check its rules on containers before you book a longer rental. And the other towns differ: Battlefield wants its free City dumpster permit for any project dumpster in public view — driveway included; Willard and Nixa keep commercial waste containers off public property without written City permission; Ash Grove's code bans obstructing a street or sidewalk; Republic wants a safe walkway kept clear. Each town page says what that town's code asks for.

Residential dumpster rental — the Missouri specifics

Missouri keeps a list of things that cannot go to a landfill, and a mixed roll-off load ends up at one. Major appliances, used oil and lead-acid batteries have been banned since January 1, 1991 — and state law counts washers, dryers, water heaters, trash compactors, dishwashers, ovens, ranges, stoves, woodstoves, air conditioners, refrigerators and freezers as major appliances. Yard waste — leaves, grass clippings, yard and garden vegetation and Christmas trees — has been banned since January 1, 1992. Whole tires can only be landfilled cut, chipped or shredded. Keep all of those out of the container; DNR says major appliances must be salvaged instead. The City's Household Chemical Collection Center at 1226 W Nichols St takes oil-based paints and stains, automotive products, pesticides, cleaners and aerosol cans from residents of Greene, Christian, Polk, Dallas and Webster counties, by appointment at 417-864-2000. The what can and cannot go in guide covers where each banned item goes instead.

Answers

Residential Dumpster Rental — your questions answered

Will the dumpster damage my driveway?

Not if it is set properly. Ask for boards under the dumpster and the driver puts them down. Tell us before delivery if a surface worries you — fresh concrete, pavers, a cracked slab, soft ground — and we will plan around it.

Can I put the dumpster on the street instead?

In Springfield, check first. City Code Sec. 98-1 bans obstructions in the public way that hinder traffic or block drainage, and work in the right-of-way that affects traffic needs a temporary traffic control permit. We found no dumpster-specific permit, so call Traffic Operations at 417-864-1980. Ash Grove's code bans obstructing a street at all, and Willard and Nixa want written City permission for a commercial container on public property. The driveway is always simpler.

Does my HOA have a say?

Often, yes. Some subdivisions have rules that cover containers in driveways. We do not know your HOA's rules — check them before you book, especially for a longer rental.

Can I put old appliances in the dumpster?

Not fridges, freezers, washers, dryers, water heaters, stoves or A/C units. Missouri has banned major appliances from landfills since 1991, and DNR says they must be salvaged — microwaves are the one exception on its list. Tell us what you have and we will point you to the right place, or let our junk removal crew take them.

How long can I keep the container?

The standard rental is up to 7 days. If the job runs on, call or text and we extend it at a small daily rate.

Do you serve outside Springfield?

Yes — fourteen more towns across Greene, Christian, Webster and Polk counties, from Bolivar to Sparta. Each has its own page. Most of the towns we checked license or permit the haulers that work inside their limits — we hold ours — and we say so plainly on each page.
