The Home Cleanout Checklist for Springfield, MO

Before you start

  • Set a realistic timeline. Big cleanouts rarely finish in one weekend, and that is fine — the standard rental is 7 days, and we extend at a small daily rate.
  • Pick the drop spot. The driveway is simplest. In Battlefield, get the free City dumpster permit for any container visible from the property line.
  • Get boxes and labels ready for the four piles below.
  • Book the dumpster for the day sorting starts, so the trash pile goes straight in.

Sort into four piles

Work room by room instead of jumping between areas, and sort everything into four categories: keep, donate, sell and trash. Labeled bins or boxes for each, set up before you begin, make decisions faster and keep the sorting organized from the first box to the last. The trash pile goes straight into the container as you clear each room — bulky furniture and bagged debris included.

Room by room — and the rooms people skip

  • Kitchen: cabinets and pantry first; small appliances can go, but the fridge, stove and dishwasher cannot (see below).
  • Living areas and bedrooms: furniture, rugs, décor, closets.
  • Bathrooms: cabinets and under-sink storage — chemicals go to the collection center, not the box.
  • Attic: years of forgotten boxes.
  • Closets and under-bed storage.
  • Garage and shed: tools, old paint, fuel cans and tires all need sorting out of the trash pile.
  • Yard: brush and clippings are a separate load under Missouri law.

The spaces people skip — attics, garages, closets and under-bed storage — often hold the most. Set aside extra time for them to keep the cleanout on schedule.

What stays out of the trash pile

Missouri law keeps major appliances — washers, dryers, water heaters, dishwashers, ovens, stoves, air conditioners, fridges and freezers — out of landfills, and MoDNR says they "must be salvaged." Car batteries, used oil, whole tires and yard waste are banned from landfills too. Oil-based paints and stains, cleaners, pesticides, aerosol cans and automotive products go to Springfield's Household Chemical Collection Center at 1226 W. Nichols Street, by appointment (417-864-2000), which serves Greene, Christian, Polk, Dallas and Webster counties. Wet paint stays out; dried, empty cans are usually okay — ask us. The what-goes-in guide has the full list.

Why the cart and the cleanup days will not cover it

In Springfield, private haulers run the carts, and the City's container rules leave bulky rubbish out. In Nixa, Republic Services takes one large item a week, and not appliances, tires, carpet or construction debris. In Sparta, GFL takes the cart only — "bags, boxes, and customer owned containers will not be picked up." Bolivar's spring Citywide Cleanup takes piles behind the curb up to 10 by 10 by 10 feet, one per category, but no normal household trash, hazardous materials, batteries, tires or appliances.

Several towns say bulky rubbish goes to haulers they license. Ash Grove, Billings, Marshfield and Sparta all tell residents to "deal directly with those licensed by the City" for bulky rubbish, and Marshfield's hauler licence is $25 a truck. We hold ours in every town we serve before you book.

Picking the box and loading it

A whole-house cleanout usually fits a 20 yard, which also handles estate and foreclosure cleanouts. A full-house cleanout with a lot of furniture may need a 30. A garage, attic or single-room cleanout fits a 10. Break down furniture, fill gaps with bags, and keep everything level with the top rim — an overfilled box cannot be safely transported. If you run out of room, call and we swap it for an empty one. Pace yourself: tackle one area at a time.

Booking

Call (417) 720-8150, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, with the address and a rough idea of how much is coming out. We deliver to your driveway — same-day or next-day — and pick up when you are done. You do not need to be home for pickup, just keep the path clear. For a smaller job with nobody to lift, ask about junk removal.

A 20 yard is the usual answer. A full-house cleanout with a lot of furniture may need a 30; a garage or single room fits a 10.

Can I put a refrigerator or washer in the dumpster?

No. Major appliances have been banned from Missouri landfills since 1991, and MoDNR says they must be salvaged. Microwaves are the exception.

How long can I keep the dumpster for a cleanout?

The standard rental is 7 days. Call or text to extend at a small daily rate, or for an early pickup with no penalty.

No. Give us clear placement instructions and keep the path clear for pickup, and you do not need to be home.
